Digital Marketing – Pictures ARE Worth a 1000 Words! Where to Find Free Images for Your Posts

Photo used with permission. Source: Yung6, Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported

If you are doing any kind of marketing today, you need great images to get your point across.  Pictures are “short codes” to the brain – they register information at a different level than mere words.  Plus, they look pretty. 🙂

Here are some of my favorite ways to add images and graphics to my blog and facebook posts:

Free

Microsoft Office – Beautiful free images. Very easy to access.

Free-Graphics.com – Free clipart.  Nice images.

MorgueFile.com

Wikimedia Commons – a database of over 14 million media files to which anyone can contribute.

Wikipedia’s List of Public Domain Image Resources – a treasure trove of websites with public domain pictures.

U.S. Government Sites – Any .gov site has content that is automatically placed into the public domain. Unless an image states otherwise, you can use it copyright free.   I particularly like these:

DotGovWatch.com –The Best Copyright-Free Photo Libraries – Stunning copyright free photos.
U.S. Government Photos and Images

Free Image-Generating Tool

Zemanta – I use this tool for blogging.  It brings up related pictures based on the words in the post. Works with WordPress, Blogger, Typepad, Tumblr, and other platforms.

Low Cost Images

iclipart.com – This is my GO TO resource. 1 year subscription is less than $40 US. Tons of high quality pictures and clipart.

istockphoto.com

bigstock.com

Other Sources

If you use a photo from a third party source, give credit.  I did an article in Technorati.com recently where we used an image of Kobe Bryant from Facebook.  We noted at the bottom of the article that the photo was from Kobe’s Facebook page.  You can see the article here:

Why Kobe Bryant Won’t Be the Next Social Media Disaster

When a photo already includes a name or website, I do NOT make a separate mention of the source.

I’m not an attorney and I am not giving legal advice.  I am just sharing what my team does for myself and my clients and what I believe to be proper practice.

If you want great legal advice on intellectual property rights, I recommend my friend and fellow National Speakers Association member Francine D. Ward, Business & Intellectual Property Lawyer.

What are your favorite sites for images?  I’d love to see your recommendations in the comments below. What guidelines do you use?

Finally! Promoted Posts for Facebook are Great News for Business Owners

Anyone who has a Facebook Page knows how hard it is to get people to visit their page.  Facebook has just made that a lot easier – for a price – with Promoted Posts.

Facebook has just rolled out the new feature, Promoted Posts, which allow you to pay to get increased exposure for your posts.   This means that your posts are much more likely to get seen by the people who have liked your Page.

This will happen because Facebook will keep the Promoted Post in the Newsfeed of your fans for up to 3 days.  Currently, you are lucky if you post stays in a fan’s Newsfeed for even a few hours.

Much of the time, Facebook Page posts don’t get into your fans’ Newsfeeds at all.

If those fans interact with the post (comment, like, or share it), then their friends might see that.  Thus, your page can attract the attention of millions more people.

This is very good news.  Currently, Facebook Page posts are at the mercy of Facebook’s Edgerank algorithm to determine which posts go into your fans’ Newsfeeds.  This levels the playing field and creates an additional very powerful communication channel.

I first heard about this months ago.   I’ve been anxiously watching for it to become reality.

Minimum post pricing varies according to the number of fans you have.  I’ve seen as little as $5 for some of the pages I manage.

In other countries, they have made this feature available to personal posts from personal profiles as well.  This would be interesting for a number of people.

This article tells you everything you need to know:

Facebook Debuts *Promoted Posts* | Facebook Advertising Tips

To try it, select the PROMOTE option which is to the left of the POST button on the bottom of the posting area.

Please let me know how Promoted Posts work out for you.

Did You Have the Meanest Mother in the World When You Were Growing Up?

Best Mother in the Whole Wide World: Billie Carr with daughter, Gina Carr

My beautiful, wonderful mom, Billie Carr, and me. This was taken at one of her world-famous Christmas family gatherings. What fun we always have!

I’m one of the lucky ones.  I didn’t have the meanest mother in the world; I had the BEST mother in the world.  My mother has had a significant influence in my life.  She has such strength, grace, ingenuity, resourcefulness, compassion, and love for her family and friends.  And, I think she is secretly powered by the Energizer Bunny.  I am a very grateful daughter.

The following column was an annual feature in the May editions of the community magazines I co-founded:  The TowneLaker, Sixes Living, and others in the Around Town Community Magazine chain.  I just love it.  Tell us about your MEAN MOM in the comments and share a picture on my Facebook wall at www.facebook.com/ginacarr.

The Meanest Mother in the World © 1967 by Bobbie Pingaro*

I had the meanest mother in the whole world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs or toast.  When others had cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different than the other kids’ also.

But at least, I wasn’t alone in my sufferings. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.

My mother insisted upon knowing where we were at all times. You’d think we were on a chain gang. She had to know who our friends were and where we were going. She insisted if we said we’d be gone an hour, that we be gone one hour or less–not one hour and one minute.

I am nearly ashamed to admit it, but she actually struck us. Not once, but each time we had a mind of our own and did as we pleased. That poor belt was used  more on our seats than it was to hold up Daddy’s pants. Can you imagine someone actually hitting a child just because he disobeyed? Now you can begin to see how mean she really was.

We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath. The other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reached the height of insults because she made our clothes herself, just to save money. Why, oh why, did we have to have a mother who made us feel different from our friends?

The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by nine each night and up at eight the next morning. We couldn’t sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept-my mother actually had the nerve to break the child-labor law. She made us work. We had to wash dishes, make beds, learn to cook and all sorts of cruel things. I believe she laid awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us.

She always insisted upon us telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, even if it killed us- and it nearly did.

By the time we were teen-agers, she was much wiser, and our life became even more unbearable. None of this tooting the horn of a car for us to come running. She embarrassed us to no end by making our dates and friends come to the door to get us. If I spent the night with a girlfriend, can you imagine she checked on me to see if I were really there. I never had the chance to elope to Mexico. That is if I’d had a boyfriend to elope with. I forgot to mention, while my friends were dating at the mature age of 12 and 13, my old fashioned mother refused to let me date until the age of 15 and 16. Fifteen, that is, if you dated only to go to a school function. And that was maybe twice a year.

Through the years, things didn’t improve a bit. We could not lie in bed, “sick” like our friends did, and miss school. If our friends had a toe ache, a hang nail or serious ailment, they could stay home from school. Our marks in school had to be up to par. Our friends’ report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother being as different as she was, would settle for nothing less than ugly black marks.

As the years rolled by, first one and then the other of us was put to shame. We were graduated from high school. With our mother behind us, talking, hitting and demanding respect, none of us was allowed the pleasure of being a drop-out.

My mother was a complete failure as a mother. Out of four children, a couple of us attained some higher education. None of us have ever been arrested, divorced or beaten his mate. Each of my brothers served his time in the service of this country. And whom do we have to blame for the terrible way we turned out? You’re right, our mean mother.  Look at the things we missed. We never got to march in a protest parade, nor to take part in a riot, burn draft cards, and a million and one other things that our friends did. She forced us to grow up into God-fearing, educated, honest adults.

Using this as a background, I am trying to raise my three children.  I stand a little taller and I am filled with pride when my children call me mean.  Because, you see, I thank God, He gave me the meanest mother in the whole world.

Klout for Good: Great Example of the Double Bottom Line Cause Marketing Strategy in Action

I’m a big believer in the concept of the Double Bottom Line – doing things that are good for business AND good for the world.

Klout for Good” is a great example of this concept in action.

The print on the picture is a little hard to read so I’ll share it with you:

“Everyone has influence, and we believe influence comes with responsiblity.  With Klout for Good you can leverage your influence to make life better for others.

Our influencers have used their Klout to educate millions about topics ranging from heart disease in women to World AIDS Day.  Help us drive positive change in the world with Klout for Good.”

I think Klout is putting together the right components to become a very successful company – a service that is needed, the ability to leverage technology to deliver that service, and a focus on the double bottom line.

Hashtag Heaven! Track Your Twitter HashTags with Hashtracking – Great Tool for Tribe Building

I’ve just returned from the Go Giver Retreat where I was introduced to a great new tool for tracking hashtag activity, Hashtracking.

Hashtracking enables you to see at a glance who participated in the chat, how many people were reached, who was retweeted the most and more.  Perhaps the best feature of this is the transcript feature that pulls every single tweet into a single document.

I also really like the Top 20 feature.   It allows you to see who had the most tweets, most reach, and most impressions.  This is very helpful information.

Facebook Offers are a Game Changer – Automatic Business Booster

Facebook quietly rolled out a powerful new feature last week:  Facebook Offers.  This coupon-type service has the potential to be a significant source of increased revenue for businesses.  It also has the potential to hurt a business if too many people claim the Offer too quickly.  Business owners need to take advantage of this opportunity but to roll promotions out carefully so as not to get overwhelmed.

Facebook Offers will enable businesses to connect with their customers in a way that is easy, direct, valuable, and free.  This is quite possibly one of the best things to happen to business owners.  I predict that many businesses will see great benefit from this immediately.  Did I mention that this is FREE?!

What are they? Facebook Offers are essentially online coupons that enable Facebook users to receive discounts from brands and businesses they care about.  This is a revamp of the Facebook Deals feature.

Facebook Deals required a person to go to the physical location in order to redeem the deals.    Facebook Offers do not require a physical location check-in to redeem the deals. This is a big plus for Offers.

These offers are great for businesses because they are free, simple to create, automatically distributed, and have the potential to go viral quickly.  Businesses should be careful as they roll out offers.  These have the potential to be redeemed by many more people than the business can handle.

These offers are great for individuals because they are very easy to access – they appear right in a person’s newsfeed – and they are easy to redeem – they can just be presented at the business via a mobile phone.

If a person is annoyed with Offers, they can click to hide offers from a specific company or they can unlike the page that sent them.

I saw one of these come through in the testing period from Chili’s.  I thought it was an awesome way to benefit me as a customer.  I shared it with several friends and I’m sure they shared it with others.

If a person wants to keep the offers they have redeemed private, that option is available.  Facebook asks you if posting the offer to your wall is okay.  If so, you can choose how public you want to make it – to everyone, just your friends, or other options.

Offers are not available to all businesses yet.  To see if you have this option, look at the sharing tool in the top of your Page’s timeline.

If you don’t have this option, you can make a request to the Facebook team by clicking here to go to the request form.

If you do have this capability, the design requirements are very simple:  the text is limited to 90 characters; the image is 90 x 90 pixels (larger photos will be cropped); terms and conditions are limited to 900 characters.

Klout Basics Explained….

Klout is an important measure of online influence.  Though still in beta, Klout offers up very interesting information about who is influential online.

I recently came across this article by Mark O’Neill which gives  a great explanation of Klout.

Do You Know How Much Klout You Have? by Mark O’Neill

“Simply put, on the web, influence is valuable currency. The higher your influence, the more people will turn to you for help, advice, recommendations and more. The higher your influence, the more likely it is that companies will turn to you with their latest products for endorsements, because they know you have the followers to potentially turn their products into successful items.”

Facebook Marketing – Brilliant Posts – How Do You Get over 200 Likes on a Post in a Single Day? Ask Jason Sadler

Every now and then, a Facebook post catches my attention and makes me go, WOW!  Why didn’t I think of that?!  In this case, Jason Sadler’s post on National Pi Day, did just that.  Take a look….
“If this status gets to 314 Likes (in honor of National Pi Day) by midnight EST I’m going to donate an IWYS day on my calendar to one lucky Like-r. And…. GO!”  March 14, 4:38 pm ET
What makes this one a WOWser?
1. Urgent. Jason creates a sense of urgency by using a quirky “holiday”.  There is a definite end time to this “event.”
2. Fun.  People would want to share this post to help him reach his goal.  That is how I found it.  It was shared by Suzanne Chace in one of my Facebook groups.  Also, the day itself, Pi Day, adds an element of fun.
3.  Promotional – in a tasteful, intriguing way.  I don’t even know what an IWYS day is at this point. However, this post definitely makes me want to find out.
4.  Engaging.  Jason did a fabulous job of “checking in” on the post as people commented.  He told them the count and kept them interested.  He kept the excitement going.
The only thing that could have been better is if he had started earlier in the day.  Getting 200+ likes on a post is pretty incredible. Still, he probably would have easily exceeded his 314 goal if he had started a little earlier.
Excellent job, Jason.  Thanks for the introduction, Suzanne Chace.

What can you do that might produce similar results?  I’d love to hear your ideas below.

Also, feel free to share the link to one of your posts that did particularly well.  Tell us all about it.  I just might feature yours as a “BRILLIANT POST” next time!

Facebook Page Cover Pics – Can’t Haves List Will Surprise You

Guidelines straight from Facebook’s Help Center:

Use a unique image that represents your Page. This might be a photo of a popular menu item, album artwork or a picture of people using your product. Be creative and experiment with images your audience responds well to.

Cover images must be at least 399 pixels wide and may not contain:
  • Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”
  • Contact information, such as web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page’s About section
  • References to user interface elements, such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features
  • Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”

All cover images are public, which means anyone visiting your Page will be able to see the image you choose. Covers must not be false, deceptive or misleading, and must not infringe on third parties’ intellectual property. You may not encourage or incentivize people to upload your cover image to their personal timelines.

Facebook Marketing – Facebook Ads Targeting – New Options Provide Powerful Ability to Reach Your Target Customer

Did you know that you can really drill down with your Facebook advertising?  Facebook recently rolled out some new advertising options. Some of the more interesting options you can choose are people who…
  • are away from family
  • are away from hometown
  • have recently moved
  • are having a birthday during the next week.
  • got engaged less than 6 months ago
  • are newlyweds less than 6 months ago
  • are Auto Intenders – planning to buy a car
  • are expecting a baby
  • are parents with childen of different age groups
It allows you to really zero in on the specific data.
You can also target geographically.  For example, you can say:

I want to market to people who have gotten engaged less than 6 months ago who live in Peoria, Illinois.

This is powerful information for both online and traditional marketers.
If you are concerned about Facebook having this sort of data, just remember that each user provides this data to Facebook.  If you don’t want this provided to advertisers, you should not put it on Facebook.  However, you should know that Facebook advertisers do not see that the information is connected to you personally.  It just allows businesses to advertise to people who meet certain criteria.

Sunday Morning Inspiration: Tom Brady – 4th String?! Superstar QB for New England Patriots Started at the Bottom

Tom Brady – Photo Credit: Wikipedia

Sunday Morning Inspiration: Did you know that superstar quarterback, Tom Brady, started his NFL career as the 4th string quarterback for the New England Patriots.   According to Wikipedia, Michigan’s quarterback was selected as pick #199, a compensatory pick, in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft.

More from Wikipedia’s page on Tom Brady….

From this humble beginning, Brady has become one of the most successful quarterback’s in NFL history.  He and Joe Montana are the only two players in NFL history to win the NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Super Bowl MVP awards multiple times (2 NFL MVPs, 2 Super Bowl MVPs). Brady and John Elway are the only two quarterbacks to lead their teams to five Super Bowls.

According to Michael Holley’s book Patriot Reign, the Patriots were considering Brady and Tim Rattay, both of whom had received positive reviews from then-quarterbacks coach Dick Rehbein. Ultimately, the Patriots front office chose Brady. Ironically, even though the Patriots drafted a future superstar in the next to last round, the class of 2000 was a mediocre vintage for quarterbacks. Brady, Chad Pennington and Marc Bulger were the only ones to see success at the NFL level.

The Patriots made the unusual decision to carry four quarterbacks (instead of three) on the roster. Brady started the season as the fourth string quarterback, behind starter Drew Bledsoe and backups John Friesz and Michael Bishop; by season’s end, he was number two on the depth chart behind Bledsoe. During his rookie season, he was 1-of-3 passing, for six yards.
