Finally! Promoted Posts for Facebook are Great News for Business Owners

Anyone who has a Facebook Page knows how hard it is to get people to visit their page.  Facebook has just made that a lot easier – for a price – with Promoted Posts.

Facebook has just rolled out the new feature, Promoted Posts, which allow you to pay to get increased exposure for your posts.   This means that your posts are much more likely to get seen by the people who have liked your Page.

This will happen because Facebook will keep the Promoted Post in the Newsfeed of your fans for up to 3 days.  Currently, you are lucky if you post stays in a fan’s Newsfeed for even a few hours.

Much of the time, Facebook Page posts don’t get into your fans’ Newsfeeds at all.

If those fans interact with the post (comment, like, or share it), then their friends might see that.  Thus, your page can attract the attention of millions more people.

This is very good news.  Currently, Facebook Page posts are at the mercy of Facebook’s Edgerank algorithm to determine which posts go into your fans’ Newsfeeds.  This levels the playing field and creates an additional very powerful communication channel.

I first heard about this months ago.   I’ve been anxiously watching for it to become reality.

Minimum post pricing varies according to the number of fans you have.  I’ve seen as little as $5 for some of the pages I manage.

In other countries, they have made this feature available to personal posts from personal profiles as well.  This would be interesting for a number of people.

This article tells you everything you need to know:

Facebook Debuts *Promoted Posts* | Facebook Advertising Tips

To try it, select the PROMOTE option which is to the left of the POST button on the bottom of the posting area.

Please let me know how Promoted Posts work out for you.

Did You Have the Meanest Mother in the World When You Were Growing Up?

Best Mother in the Whole Wide World: Billie Carr with daughter, Gina Carr

My beautiful, wonderful mom, Billie Carr, and me. This was taken at one of her world-famous Christmas family gatherings. What fun we always have!

I’m one of the lucky ones.  I didn’t have the meanest mother in the world; I had the BEST mother in the world.  My mother has had a significant influence in my life.  She has such strength, grace, ingenuity, resourcefulness, compassion, and love for her family and friends.  And, I think she is secretly powered by the Energizer Bunny.  I am a very grateful daughter.

The following column was an annual feature in the May editions of the community magazines I co-founded:  The TowneLaker, Sixes Living, and others in the Around Town Community Magazine chain.  I just love it.  Tell us about your MEAN MOM in the comments and share a picture on my Facebook wall at www.facebook.com/ginacarr.

The Meanest Mother in the World © 1967 by Bobbie Pingaro*

I had the meanest mother in the whole world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs or toast.  When others had cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different than the other kids’ also.

But at least, I wasn’t alone in my sufferings. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.

My mother insisted upon knowing where we were at all times. You’d think we were on a chain gang. She had to know who our friends were and where we were going. She insisted if we said we’d be gone an hour, that we be gone one hour or less–not one hour and one minute.

I am nearly ashamed to admit it, but she actually struck us. Not once, but each time we had a mind of our own and did as we pleased. That poor belt was used  more on our seats than it was to hold up Daddy’s pants. Can you imagine someone actually hitting a child just because he disobeyed? Now you can begin to see how mean she really was.

We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath. The other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reached the height of insults because she made our clothes herself, just to save money. Why, oh why, did we have to have a mother who made us feel different from our friends?

The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by nine each night and up at eight the next morning. We couldn’t sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept-my mother actually had the nerve to break the child-labor law. She made us work. We had to wash dishes, make beds, learn to cook and all sorts of cruel things. I believe she laid awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us.

She always insisted upon us telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, even if it killed us- and it nearly did.

By the time we were teen-agers, she was much wiser, and our life became even more unbearable. None of this tooting the horn of a car for us to come running. She embarrassed us to no end by making our dates and friends come to the door to get us. If I spent the night with a girlfriend, can you imagine she checked on me to see if I were really there. I never had the chance to elope to Mexico. That is if I’d had a boyfriend to elope with. I forgot to mention, while my friends were dating at the mature age of 12 and 13, my old fashioned mother refused to let me date until the age of 15 and 16. Fifteen, that is, if you dated only to go to a school function. And that was maybe twice a year.

Through the years, things didn’t improve a bit. We could not lie in bed, “sick” like our friends did, and miss school. If our friends had a toe ache, a hang nail or serious ailment, they could stay home from school. Our marks in school had to be up to par. Our friends’ report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother being as different as she was, would settle for nothing less than ugly black marks.

As the years rolled by, first one and then the other of us was put to shame. We were graduated from high school. With our mother behind us, talking, hitting and demanding respect, none of us was allowed the pleasure of being a drop-out.

My mother was a complete failure as a mother. Out of four children, a couple of us attained some higher education. None of us have ever been arrested, divorced or beaten his mate. Each of my brothers served his time in the service of this country. And whom do we have to blame for the terrible way we turned out? You’re right, our mean mother.  Look at the things we missed. We never got to march in a protest parade, nor to take part in a riot, burn draft cards, and a million and one other things that our friends did. She forced us to grow up into God-fearing, educated, honest adults.

Using this as a background, I am trying to raise my three children.  I stand a little taller and I am filled with pride when my children call me mean.  Because, you see, I thank God, He gave me the meanest mother in the whole world.

What does Klout Count when they Compute Your Klout Score?

People often ask me:  “Gina, what does Klout count when they compute my Klout score?”

Great question.  I help a lot of clients with this issue when I work with them to improve their Klout

scores and social scores.

Here are the networks that Klout actually counts at this time when computing your Klout score.

Twitter – RT’s and replies to you count more than simple broadcast tweets from you.

Facebook – Your Personal Profile counts but not your Facebook Page and not groups.

******** Update:  As of July 2011, Klout DOES count your Facebook Page OR your Personal Profile, not both.

Linkedin – posts and public group activity counts.  Linkedin counts but not as much as the others.

Google+ – Public posts count – comments, reshares, +1

Foursquare –  Todo’s and Tips – Done

The exact formula is unknown as their algorithm is proprietary.

Although Klout allows you to connect other social networks, they aren’t tabulated as part of the score yet.

Klout for Good: Great Example of the Double Bottom Line Cause Marketing Strategy in Action

I’m a big believer in the concept of the Double Bottom Line – doing things that are good for business AND good for the world.

Klout for Good” is a great example of this concept in action.

The print on the picture is a little hard to read so I’ll share it with you:

“Everyone has influence, and we believe influence comes with responsiblity.  With Klout for Good you can leverage your influence to make life better for others.

Our influencers have used their Klout to educate millions about topics ranging from heart disease in women to World AIDS Day.  Help us drive positive change in the world with Klout for Good.”

I think Klout is putting together the right components to become a very successful company – a service that is needed, the ability to leverage technology to deliver that service, and a focus on the double bottom line.

“Social Profiling” &”Digital Grooming” are New Fields Thanks to Online Influence Networks Like Klout

Executives will seek counsel on "digital grooming."

I was so pleased to find a terrific article that does a fabulous job explaining how online influence measurement networks like Klout and Kred are going to affect our lives whether we like it or not. As a marketing strategist, this data is extremely helpful to business leaders who want to reach the right people.

My CEO and thought leader clients are increasingly asking me to help them with “digital grooming” – raising their Klout scores, helping them look better online, growing their platforms (followers, fans, and connections), and more.

These are exciting – and scary – times. I am thrilled to have discovered this author (Andrew Golub @AvG), blog (SNID.eu), and this program, based in Italy,  SNID – Social Network Influence Design program.  I discovered all of this in Klout.

If you are interested in online influence, I think you will find this interesting as well.

“Ready or not, new technologies will enable strangers to know your social scores even before you shake their hand.
Whether it’s on a job interview, before a meeting, a first date, and as you walk into a store, more disruptive technologies are on the horizon that will enable social data to be easily accessed and viewable in real world situations. Profiling, which has negative connotations in terms of race, law enforcement, and beyond, is commonly used by marketers (and humans sub-consciously) to sort people around us. Yet in our digital and social world…”

Hashtag Heaven! Track Your Twitter HashTags with Hashtracking – Great Tool for Tribe Building

I’ve just returned from the Go Giver Retreat where I was introduced to a great new tool for tracking hashtag activity, Hashtracking.

Hashtracking enables you to see at a glance who participated in the chat, how many people were reached, who was retweeted the most and more.  Perhaps the best feature of this is the transcript feature that pulls every single tweet into a single document.

I also really like the Top 20 feature.   It allows you to see who had the most tweets, most reach, and most impressions.  This is very helpful information.

Facebook Offers are a Game Changer – Automatic Business Booster

Facebook quietly rolled out a powerful new feature last week:  Facebook Offers.  This coupon-type service has the potential to be a significant source of increased revenue for businesses.  It also has the potential to hurt a business if too many people claim the Offer too quickly.  Business owners need to take advantage of this opportunity but to roll promotions out carefully so as not to get overwhelmed.

Facebook Offers will enable businesses to connect with their customers in a way that is easy, direct, valuable, and free.  This is quite possibly one of the best things to happen to business owners.  I predict that many businesses will see great benefit from this immediately.  Did I mention that this is FREE?!

What are they? Facebook Offers are essentially online coupons that enable Facebook users to receive discounts from brands and businesses they care about.  This is a revamp of the Facebook Deals feature.

Facebook Deals required a person to go to the physical location in order to redeem the deals.    Facebook Offers do not require a physical location check-in to redeem the deals. This is a big plus for Offers.

These offers are great for businesses because they are free, simple to create, automatically distributed, and have the potential to go viral quickly.  Businesses should be careful as they roll out offers.  These have the potential to be redeemed by many more people than the business can handle.

These offers are great for individuals because they are very easy to access – they appear right in a person’s newsfeed – and they are easy to redeem – they can just be presented at the business via a mobile phone.

If a person is annoyed with Offers, they can click to hide offers from a specific company or they can unlike the page that sent them.

I saw one of these come through in the testing period from Chili’s.  I thought it was an awesome way to benefit me as a customer.  I shared it with several friends and I’m sure they shared it with others.

If a person wants to keep the offers they have redeemed private, that option is available.  Facebook asks you if posting the offer to your wall is okay.  If so, you can choose how public you want to make it – to everyone, just your friends, or other options.

Offers are not available to all businesses yet.  To see if you have this option, look at the sharing tool in the top of your Page’s timeline.

If you don’t have this option, you can make a request to the Facebook team by clicking here to go to the request form.

If you do have this capability, the design requirements are very simple:  the text is limited to 90 characters; the image is 90 x 90 pixels (larger photos will be cropped); terms and conditions are limited to 900 characters.

To learn more about how you as a business owner can take advantage of Facebook Offers, click here  to go to the Facebook Help for Page Administrators.

Klout Basics Explained….

Klout is an important measure of online influence.  Though still in beta, Klout offers up very interesting information about who is influential online.

I recently came across this article by Mark O’Neill which gives  a great explanation of Klout.

Do You Know How Much Klout You Have? by Mark O’Neill

“Simply put, on the web, influence is valuable currency. The higher your influence, the more people will turn to you for help, advice, recommendations and more. The higher your influence, the more likely it is that companies will turn to you with their latest products for endorsements, because they know you have the followers to potentially turn their products into successful items.”

Facebook Marketing – Brilliant Posts – How Do You Get over 200 Likes on a Post in a Single Day? Ask Jason Sadler

Every now and then, a Facebook post catches my attention and makes me go, WOW!  Why didn’t I think of that?!  In this case, Jason Sadler’s post on National Pi Day, did just that.  Take a look….
“If this status gets to 314 Likes (in honor of National Pi Day) by midnight EST I’m going to donate an IWYS day on my calendar to one lucky Like-r. And…. GO!”  March 14, 4:38 pm ET
What makes this one a WOWser?
1. Urgent. Jason creates a sense of urgency by using a quirky “holiday”.  There is a definite end time to this “event.”
2. Fun.  People would want to share this post to help him reach his goal.  That is how I found it.  It was shared by Suzanne Chace in one of my Facebook groups.  Also, the day itself, Pi Day, adds an element of fun.
3.  Promotional – in a tasteful, intriguing way.  I don’t even know what an IWYS day is at this point. However, this post definitely makes me want to find out.
4.  Engaging.  Jason did a fabulous job of “checking in” on the post as people commented.  He told them the count and kept them interested.  He kept the excitement going.
The only thing that could have been better is if he had started earlier in the day.  Getting 200+ likes on a post is pretty incredible. Still, he probably would have easily exceeded his 314 goal if he had started a little earlier.
Excellent job, Jason.  Thanks for the introduction, Suzanne Chace.

What can you do that might produce similar results?  I’d love to hear your ideas below.

Also, feel free to share the link to one of your posts that did particularly well.  Tell us all about it.  I just might feature yours as a “BRILLIANT POST” next time!

Facebook Page Cover Pics – Can’t Haves List Will Surprise You

Guidelines straight from Facebook’s Help Center:

Use a unique image that represents your Page. This might be a photo of a popular menu item, album artwork or a picture of people using your product. Be creative and experiment with images your audience responds well to.

Cover images must be at least 399 pixels wide and may not contain:
  • Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”
  • Contact information, such as web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page’s About section
  • References to user interface elements, such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features
  • Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”

All cover images are public, which means anyone visiting your Page will be able to see the image you choose. Covers must not be false, deceptive or misleading, and must not infringe on third parties’ intellectual property. You may not encourage or incentivize people to upload your cover image to their personal timelines.

Facebook Marketing: Page Timelines – What it Means for Your Facebook Marketing Strategy

Facebook announced some big changes Wednesday — how will they affect your social marketing strategy? I think these are the biggest changes that will affect marketing your business with Facebook:

1. the elimination of a custom Welcome/Landing page – no more LIKE-gates,

2. the reduction of visibility of custom tabs, and
3. the ability to push content out to the News Feed through paid advertisement.

I see this last change – the ability to buy News Feed placement – as a good thing. It has been very frustrating to get people to Pages due to Facebook’s Edgerank formula which has been making Page posts less likely to show up in the News Feeds. This will allow better control of that. Overall, I see these changes as good. What say you?

I’ll be writing more about this in the next few days.  For a terrific explanation of the changes and how they will affect your business, check out this article from Clickable.

Klout Power – How To Raise Your Klout score? Have a Birthday!

People often ask me: Gina, how do I raise my Klout score? “It’s easy,” I say. “Just have a birthday.”

When someone has a birthday, Facebook does an excellent job of letting your friends know about it several days in advance – if you’ve made your birthday public.*

Typically, lots of people post on your Facebook personal profile wall on this day and a few days before. This gives you a lot of Klout juice which results in a big jump to your Klout score.

Take a look at this example. This Klout users score went up by 6 points in just a few days. That is a significant and highly unusual increase now that Klout’s scoring is much more stable. Significant daily fluctuations in Klout scores decreased greatly after the infamous #Kloutfail of October 2011 when Klout changed it’s algorithm to reflect data from 90 days instead of 30.

Still, it appears from the Birthday Boost Phenomenon that Klout must use a weighted average which gives more weight to immediate past activity. A simple average would not yield such a significant increase.

It will be interesting to follow this user’s activity to see if and when the score drops back to this users previous “normal” score of around 55.

Birthdays are special events with a beginning and an end.  Thus there is a sense of urgency for people wanting to wish you well.  People recognize that birthdays are important and they want to be part of your special day, to let you know they care.

How can you create more special events on your Facebook profile?  Perhaps you can celebrate other holidays – established ones and special ones. You could also sponsor special events like a Facebook “chat” or “office hours” on your wall to answer questions once a week.

What about you? Have you seen your Klout score jump significantly after a birthday or other special event?  What ideas do you have to “simulate” the Birthday Boost by creating other special event?  Please share in the comments below or on my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ginacarrfanpage.  And, I invite you to share this post with your friends if you found it helpful.

*Safety note – only publicize your birth month and date on social networking sites. Don’t publicize your birth year as that is an identity theft issue according to experts.

Facebook Marketing – Facebook Ads Targeting – New Options Provide Powerful Ability to Reach Your Target Customer

Did you know that you can really drill down with your Facebook advertising?  Facebook recently rolled out some new advertising options. Some of the more interesting options you can choose are people who…
  • are away from family
  • are away from hometown
  • have recently moved
  • are having a birthday during the next week.
  • got engaged less than 6 months ago
  • are newlyweds less than 6 months ago
  • are Auto Intenders – planning to buy a car
  • are expecting a baby
  • are parents with childen of different age groups
It allows you to really zero in on the specific data.
You can also target geographically.  For example, you can say:

I want to market to people who have gotten engaged less than 6 months ago who live in Peoria, Illinois.

This is powerful information for both online and traditional marketers.
If you are concerned about Facebook having this sort of data, just remember that each user provides this data to Facebook.  If you don’t want this provided to advertisers, you should not put it on Facebook.  However, you should know that Facebook advertisers do not see that the information is connected to you personally.  It just allows businesses to advertise to people who meet certain criteria.

Social Networking: How Do I Get More Participation in my Linkedin Group? My Top 10 Tips

I’m frequently asked, “Gina, how do I get people to participate in my Linkedin group?”

It is a common frustration among group owners and managers.  You spend time creating a Linkedin group.  You invite your associates to join you.  In the beginning, you have a flury of activity and it looks like you have created a terrific “online clubhouse” for your community to discuss common goals and issues.

After a few weeks, the activity dwindles and despite your efforts, you just can’t seem to get people talking and interacting the way you had envisioned.  You get frustrated.

Although there are no magic bullets for increasing participation in your Linkedin group, here are a few ideas to spur participation.

1.  Make participation easy for members.  Ask questions that can be answered easily.  Use fill in the blank questions like this:  “The worst mistake I see sales people making is ___________.”  Occasionally use the Poll feature.  It gives people an easy way to provide input.

2.  Encourage members to post their own articles and questions that are related to the group’s mission.  They can also post related articles that were written by others. – OPC – Other People’s Content.  Feature some of these as “Manager’s Choice.”

3.  Feature a member as “Member of the Month (or Week).”  Tell the group a little about that person and why it would be beneficial for group members to know him or her.

4.  When members post articles and questions, be sure to thank them and to comment on that article.  In addition to a public thank you, a private LI message will let them know that you appreciate them and might encourage them to post again.

5.  Have a Member Promotion Day once a week.  On a specific day each week, host an “It’s All About Me” or “The World Revolves Around Me” day.  Encourage members to promote themselves, their blogs, their events – anything they want.  Another variation might be “What Can We Do To Help You?” day.

6. Remind people to go to the group in your other marketing channels – Facebook, blog, twittter.  Give them a reason to do so – post your questions, give us your input, join the discussion, etc.

7.  Host a contest related to your mission.  It can be as simple as “Question of the Week”  where you recognize the best question that someone has posted.  People love to win anything. Be creative and think of some good contests that relate to current events or special occasions.

8.  Welcome new members publicly.  Invite new members to introduce themselves to the group.  Allow them to give a brief “elevator speech” and share links to their blog, website, and other social media networks.

9.  Ask for recommendations about products and services that people in your group use.  This shows that you value their opinions and seek their guidance.

10.  Encourage group members to give testimonials to other group members.  That is powerful word-of-mouth endorsement.  People often would like to do this but don’t know if it is appropriate.  Teach by doing.  Others will follow.

Look at the Marketing Over Coffee group as a model.  They do a great job of fostering interaction among the members.  They also do a terrific job of promoting it each week on their very popular weekly podcast, Marketing Over Coffee.

I manage a group called Communicate with Confidence® with Dianna Booher.  I invite you to join if you are interested in how communication affects organizational performance, marketing results, and business relationships.

I’d love to get your ideas about how to engage members of a Linkedin group.  I’d also love to see links to groups that are doing a great job with this.  Feel free to post links to your own groups and tell us about them.  Please post in the comments below.
